Adventures on Hwy 37

Happy Earth Day (one day late) to all!!! I am a big fan of earth day, and well the earth in general. I would call myself an environmentalist....we recycle, have power bars for our computer and TV, and we like to be outside. However, I am somewhat breaking my environmentalist approach with my travels to and from school. As most of you all know, my school travels are a bit long.....about an hour to an hour and a half (depending on the time I leave home and how many stop lights I hit.) Most days, I leave the house around 5:30 to get to work or school by 7 am (I HEART CLINICALS!!). Other days, I am leaving the house by 7 am. My drive up to school is mainly Hwy 37, there is no major interstate that runs from Indy to Bloomington. Well, interesting things happen on Hwy 37, especially on nice sunny 60-70 degree days. For example, today I saw a person fly up the merge lane onto the shoulder cut across traffic (literally cutting off a car and truck) to stop at the next light get out of his car and almost throw down with the guy in the big rig.....yes the guy stopped his car in the turn lane, got out and stated to the truck driver that he did not want to cause trouble (it should be added that the light had just turned green) but he was a trucker and that is the last of the conversation that I heard due to the fact I was getting the hell out of there.....I know that I am a nursing student, but I was not going to deal with that situation if blood was going to fly. As I drove away, I did watch the saga end quietly in the rearview mirror.
That is one story of many weird things I have seen on highway 37....here are some other notable sights
1. Old guy on a big tricycle (the peddling kind) swerving into and out of the northbound lanes.
2. People jogging on the shoulder.....it should be noted the average speed is about 65-70 mph.
3. A couple with their dog running next to their bicycles (once again peddling) southbound towards Martinsville (about 10 miles from it)......it gave me the impression that the two bags on their backs, their bikes, and their dog was the only thing this couple had left....sad thought
In other news.....things have been going great for Blair and I lately. I just finished my psych clinical (THANK GOD!!!!!!) yesterday.....psych nursing will not be my profession. I will be done with my second semester of nursing school in about 2 weeks. I get off for about 4 days, then start my summer session...only a year left until graduation. Blair is starting his second subject for his research project looking at the effects of different exercise intensities on endothelial function (simple terms....how your blood vessels respond to exercise). Also, Blair got a job teaching exercise physiology labs this summer.....yeah for $$$!
According to Blair's IM message today, we have 8 days and counting to the Indy Mini Marathon (mini=half marathon=13.1 miles). It should be interesting....they have over 40,000 participants...according to one of my friends, it took her over 20 minutes to get to the starting line.....gre-at..........I think it might be our first and last Indy Mini Marathon! For me, it will be my first official half marathon....yes I was crazy...I officially ran a full prior to an official half marathon. It will be Blair's second half marathon.....he is praying that it does not rain....like his first one!
It should be an awesome weekend.....in the 80's and "little 5" (little 5=bike race in Bloomington).
